What is "hold"?

imho, these 'overdrive' and 'hold' features round up the classic notion of "manual > auto"

What is the button on the side of the auto gear that when I press, the word "hold" appears in the status indicator?

I know some cars have overdrive button on the side of the gear. This one dun have. Just “hold”.

What car are you driving ? Does the button have anything printed on it ? Usually all buttons in the car are marked.

My bet is you are driving the 90s Mazda 626?

When the "Hold" signal appears, the transmission will now be locked in the gear you have selected with the shift lever. It is a system in which the user is able to manually select a gear and implement it to the comfort of the user (much like Steptronic). It is one of the earlier system of a manually shifted electronically controlled automatic. For example, if you turn on the HOLD mode and shift to second gear, the car will start off in second gear and stay there
until you move to another gear.

hmm .. but 99% of the time I use the 'D' gear .. ??!!

from your explanation .. I see no difference in using hold for D gear.

It doesn't need to be a 90s 626... All Mazda 323s comes with the "hold" button... I currently drive the Protege and it has this button too... It will hold your gear to the 2nd highest gear allowable.

Eg. L2 -> Max gear is 2 -> when hold, max gear = 1
S3 -> Max gear is 3 -> when hold, max gear = 2
D -> Max gear is 4 -> when hold, max gear = 3

It is very usual for overtaking when u wanna drop gear and reach a higher RPM....

LOL .. if I want to overtake .. shd get an auto with overdrive .. even the 1.6 Hyundai Elantra has it.

What some bros said earlier is to let the gear stay and not shift up to acheive higher revs(rpm) which give more power to overtake. Like the Lancer “Ds” mode, etc, etc

The "hold" button is equivalent to overdrive...
When overdrive is off, the car will not be able to shift up to its most efficient gear, which is the 4th gear for 4AT cars... It is the same when u the hold button is on...

Juz click the button when u want to overtake, the gear will drop from 4 to 3 immediately, the reaction is faster than when u fully depress the accelerator pedal to downgear...

manual override & Steptronic is quite good…allowing u to downshift to overtake

Exactly.... My car also comes with the "Ds" mode like lancer but its named as S3 and has the hold button too... The advantage of the button is that u can downgear very swiftly without having to pull the gear stick...

all auto cars allows u to downshift to overtake... u dun need manual override... its a matter of how u do it...

manual override merely gives u the advange of shifting every gear by yourself... u can do that on conventional auto gearboxes too but be prepared to change a new one if done frequently...

The blue part reads quite confusing. How come overdrive off is equivalent to hold button on? I thought both are used for overtaking? Thanks.
